Question 3 – Shape
How is shape used in the composition? 2-d, 3-d, grouping of shapes, etc. How were elements of shape used to optimum effect in composition? If shape was not effective give reasons.
A: The jets in the air are all grouped together pointing right which takes me to look to the right. The shape of the ship creates the illusion of 3d by its perspective direction as well as it’s shape seems to be also pointing to the right as well as the lone jet on the left pointing to the right.

Question 1 – Space
How is space used in the composition? (filling the space:concept of Positive/Negative explored. Techniques which may create the illusion of space(which techniques)? How were elements of space used to optimum effect in composition? If space was not effective give reasons.

Space is used very effectively in this composition. Jason filled the space with the aircraft carrier as well as the faint overlay of the turret of the capitol building. The outline of a helicopter as it is taking off or landing hovers over the carrier, adding an element of negative space to the composition. The concept of space is further explored with the jet aircraft in the background, being more darkly shaded and smaller in relation to the foreground, gives the illusion that they are further away within the space of the composition.

Question 5 – Personal Perspective – Quality
I can tell that the composition was well thought out. The opaque over lay of a building and the American flag was a nice touch. He used his space very well. Actual and imaginary lines are shown in the airplane in the upper left hand corner. The image successfully uses all the concepts we were have learned so far.

Personal Perspective – Concept
How effectively was the concept of “transportation” explored? Do you think that this student successfully communicated transportation as the main idea of the composition; if not what do you think the main concept is?
I do think that Jason used the concept of “transportation” well. In his composition he used several differnt means of transportation all focusing on the military use; ships, bomers and a helicopter. I think that the main idea is there, but it almost seems to compete with the “American” or “military” theme with the flag and the white house being in the forground. I really like the piece, but I don’t know if right off hand I would first think transportation. Maybe it’s because civillians typically don’t use those forms so it’s harder for me to relate. It’s a really good piece, however.

Question 2 – Line
How is line used in the composition? Contour, types of line, emotion or texture effectively used (describe where and how within the composition).
How were elements of line used to optimum effect in composition? If line was not effective give reasons.
- The Contour on the Helicopter fits well and is well placed. I personally like the Texture used on the Ocean Water. Very effective use of texture. I think that this texture was the “optimum effect” in this composition.
